SHELTER DIVERSION COORDINATOR

Family Promise of Waukesha County, Inc. is starting a new Shelter Diversion Program in Waukesha County.  This is an exciting moment to join our team and help plan, develop and implement a program from the ground up. We will work collaboratively with the Wisconsin Balance of State in creating the program.

 


Summary of Role 

The Diversion Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of all aspects of the Shelter Diversion program. This program will focus on assisting families to find temporary and permanent housing so that they are able to avoid the shelter system. They work as a partner with the Shelter Diversion Family Advocate, collaboratively with the Program Team and receive direct supervision from the Family Services Director. The Diversion Coordinator should have a trauma informed approach to all families and focus on creative problem solving. 


Qualifications and Competencies 

The Shelter Diversion Coordinator will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or comparable degree. The successful candidate will possess:

  • Minimum of two years experience working with families experiencing homelessness

  • Familiarity with the shelter system and Shelter Diversion

  • Experience in program development, implementation, coordination and assessment

  • Knowledge of the eviction process

  • Understanding of mediation

  • Collaborative spirit

Essential Functions

  • Accept referrals at the “front-door” and provide a prompt response to families who are imminently at risk of becoming homeless and/or at the cusp of entering shelter. 

  • Assist families to quickly and creatively secure temporary and permanent housing.  

  • Connect families with mainstream resources to address obstacles to housing.

  • Collaborate with the Shelter Diversion case manager in providing care and services to families experiencing homelessness.

  • Work with the Executive Director and Family Services Director to develop a strong regional network of landlords who are willing to work with and provide housing to clients of Family Promise of Waukesha County. 

  • Serve as an advocate for families with community service agencies.

  • Offer seminars to help schools, hospitals, police, agencies, congregations, to understand shelter diversion and explain how families can access services.

  • Provide crisis support to families as needed.

  • Conduct regular meetings at minimum and communicate with families in a way that is mutually convenient.

  • Work alongside Family Promise staff and relevant local agencies to develop a mediation process to help tenants and landlords to resolve disputes.

  • Develop an escrow arrangement as an insurance for landlords leery of accepting low income families as tenants.

  •  Create a system of legal support for families going through the eviction process.

  • Develop resources with businesses, congregations, civic groups who are able to provide support during family moves and to navigate housing obstacles.

  • Recruit volunteers to provide light maintenance to support landlords who assist families with previous evictions.

  • Ensure that Case Management is provided to families with minor children in a compassionate, effective and trauma informed manner.

  • Maintain in a timely and thorough manner various information management systems regarding referral sources, referral outcomes, guest intakes, guest progress, program completion, guest discharges, alumni progress and outcome measurements including HMIS/Clarity and Coordinated Entry.


Supervisory Responsibility

None. 


Work Environment

This job operates in an office environment within a day center shelter for homeless families.  It involves regular interaction with and distraction from day center guests along with drop-in/call-in donors, volunteers, vendors and clients. Home visits are required. This role routinely uses standard office systems such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.


Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  Should be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs. 


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position. Some hours are scheduled to ensure coverage of the Family Resource and Day Center. General hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours are regularly required.  


Travel

Local travel by automobile during the business day occurs regularly and should be expected.  There is some evening and weekend travel.  Out-of-the-area and overnight travel is rare.


Must have a valid driver’s license.
