Updated: Sep 17

September 16, 2024

The Family Promise Five is a weekly newsletter communication whose purpose is to update, inform and advocate for families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Our mission is to help low-income families and families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.

In this edition you will find these stories:

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

People who are homeless are not social inadequates. They are people without homes.

-Sheila McKechnie

PHOTOS OF THE WEEK

Last week Joe Nettesheim and Board Member Ed Butte attended the Waukesha County Business Alliance Annual Meeting.

Last week we asked how many congregations were part of Family Promise of Western Waukesha County. The answer was 10.

One of the games we will play at Trivia Night is an adaptation of Wheel of Fortune. What is the correct answer? (please note that not all clues will be about our organization- and may not be as easy as this one. Nor will you have multiple choice answers to pick from.)

2. DIVERSION PROGRAM FAMILY SECURES HOUSING

Our very first Shelter Diversion client has secured independent housing.

Mission

Our first shelter diversion family has secured a home of their own this past week! This family was recommended to us by a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, this mom had to flee her home suddenly. After spending some time in another shelter her friend opened her home to her. After staying with her friend for short time she reached out to Family Promise seeking assistance.

Making an agreement with her friend, we set a 30 day time frame to help her find her own housing. We provided financial assistance to her friend to make it easier for her to host our client. During this month, our family advocate, Kelly, worked diligently to come up with a budgeting plan and connect this family to resources that she requested in order to be able to secure housing. Last week, she shared with us that she signed a lease for her and her children. To give her an opportunity to secure this apartment we were able to assist with her security deposit and first month's rent. This was a moment to celebrate that the very first client for Shelter Diversion was able to secure a new home and start a new chapter in their lives.

There are many challenges that face families experiencing homelessness but, we have not experienced this success with every family we have worked with through Shelter Diversion. however, when one family secures housing it gives all of us hope.

The slide deck below shows statistics for our three core programs: Prevention, Shelter Diversion and Shelter. They capture the stats for August and the year to date total.
